Like clothing, unfortunately in many public places a leash isn’t optional. We’ve discussed in our ‘It all starts with the leash' dog blog post how leash adjustability is essential to keep up with your doggo’s busy lifestyle, but we still have so many things to teach you about one of our most pawrent-friendly accessories!

At Floofy, we try to avoid overwhelming you with options, however there are still some things to think about when finding the pawfect accessories for your pup/s. Unlike our harnesses, a large doggo doesn’t necessarily mean a large leash, and vice versa. The decision requires more of a pawsonality quiz.

  • How confident is your pup on a leash?
  • Does your pup heel or are they more of a “choose-your-own-adventure” type?
  • Is your pup usually an off-leash pal, and will this accessory only be used when it’s time to be a law-abiding citizen?
  • Is your floof strong-bodied or strong-willed? Are they neither or both?
  • Does your pup enjoy walks with their siblings or mates?

Our leashes and hardware are made to be strong and durable, however if your petite pup is a strong-bodied adventurer who loves to pull, then perhaps the slimmer width on our small leash is not for you. We recommend going for a wider (size large) leash and using the three attachment points to guide your pup through their daily routine.

Likewise, if your pup is pocket-sized but fiercely determined to sniff out every lamppost on the wrong side of the road, perhaps it’s time to embrace a larger design.

Is your furend larger in both size and personality? If they fit the weight recommendations in our leash size guide, then you can use the smaller style to teach a little heal action.

Two small pups to walk at once? Throw out any additional accessories and opt for our large leash with a harness or collar attachment point at each end. (Please note, size does matter, so check our weight specs to make sure you’re not demanding too much from your tether.)

We’ve spoken to our doggo pals, and have a few case studies to walk 🐾  you through this.

Meet Danika and Charlie! Charlie is a beautiful Chocolate Labrador whose eyes for adventure are a little larger than their local park. Let’s just say, this big boy still needs some guidance. For Charlie’s sake, Danika has opted for a smaller leash, reducing slack and adding more control to their daily routine.

On the opposite end, we have Natalie and Oscar. Our furend Oscar is a charming Cocker Spaniel who has walkies down pack. One could say he’s a seasoned pupfressional. Natalie finds Oscar is far too advanced for the small leash. Control? Doesn’t need it. Slack? Oscar requires it all. Despite Oscar’s pocket-sized beauty, the two pals agreed a longer leash is the way to go for all adventures.

Karen has more than one pup in the fam, and they love stepping out at the same time. As Vegas and Bali are on the smaller side, Karen was able to throw out her old leash attachments and opt for the one Signature style. She can simply attach her doggos to each side of the leash, hold from the centre and off they go!

Note: For Vegas and Bali’s bigger-breed besties, we still recommend two separate leashes. Our accessories are strong, but let’s be real, they’re no match for two German Shepherds on two separate missions.

Long leash short, have a think about your pups build and pawrefrences. The best leash for your walkies might surprise you!
